Home Remedies for Diabetes

Diabetes, also called diabetes mellitus, has become a very common heath problem. There are two main types of diabetes- type 1 diabetes in which the body does not produce insulin and type 2 diabetes in which the body does not produce enough insulin or the insulin that is produced does not work properly.

Some of the common symptoms of diabetes include fatigue, weight loss (even though you are eating more), excessive thirst, increased urination, cut and bruises that are slow to heal and blurred vision.

While there is no cure for diabetes, with your blood sugar level under control you can live a totally normal life. There are various natural remedies for diabetes that will help you control your blood sugar level.

Here are the top 10 home remedies for diabetes. Needless to say, you also need to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Out of the 10, we have covered 3 highly effective home remedies in this video as well.)

1. Bitter Gourd

Bitter gourd, also known as bitter melon, can be helpful for controlling diabetes due to its blood glucose lowering effects. It tends to influence the glucose metabolism all over your body rather than a particular organ or tissue.
It helps increase pancreatic insulin secretion and prevents insulin resistance. Thus, bitter gourd is beneficial for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. However, it cannot be used to entirely replace insulin treatment.
  • Drink some bitter gourd juice on an empty stomach each morning. First remove the seeds of two to three bitter gourds and use a juicer to extract the juice. Add some water and then drink it. Follow this treatment daily in the morning for at least two months.
  • Also, you can include one dish made of bitter gourd daily in your diet.

2. Cinnamon

Powdered cinnamon has the ability to lower blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin activity. Itcontains bioactive components that can help prevent and fight diabetes.
Certain trials have shown that it can work as an effective option to lower blood sugar levels in cases of uncontrolled type-2 diabetes.
Cinnamon, however, should not be taken in excess because we commonly use Cassia cinnamon (found in most grocery stores) which contains a compound called coumarin. It is a toxic compound that increases the risk of liver damage.
There is another variety of this herb known as Ceylon cinnamon or “true cinnamon.” It is considered safer for health but its effects on blood glucose levels have not been studied adequately.
  • Mix one-half to one teaspoon of cinnamon in a cup of warm water. Drink it daily.
  • Another option is to boil two to four cinnamon sticks in one cup of water and allow it to steep for 20 minutes. Drink this solution daily until you see improvement.
  • You can also add cinnamon to warm beverages, smoothies and baked goods.

3. Fenugreek

Fenugreek is an herb that can also be used to control diabetes, improve glucose tolerance and lower blood sugar levels due to its hypoglycaemic activity. It also stimulates the secretion of glucose-dependent insulin. Being high in fiber, it slows down the absorption of carbohydrates and sugars.
  • Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Drink the water along with the seeds in the morning on an empty stomach. Follow this remedy without fail for a few months to bring down your glucose level.
  • Another option is to eat two tablespoons of powdered fenugreek seeds daily with milk.

4. Indian Gooseberry (Amla)

Indian gooseberry, also known as Amla, is rich in vitamin C and Indian gooseberry juice promotes proper functioning of your pancreas.
  • Take two to three Indian gooseberries, remove the seeds and grind it into a fine paste. Put the paste in a cloth and squeeze out the juice. Mix two tablespoon of the juice in one cup of water and drink it daily on an empty stomach.
  • Alternatively, mix one tablespoon of Indian gooseberry juice in a cup of bitter gourd juice and drink it daily for a few months.

5. Black Plum or Indian Black Berry (Jambul)

Black plum or jambul, also known as jamun can help a lot in controlling blood sugar level because it contains anthocyanins, ellagic acid, hydrolysable tannins etc.
Each part of the Jambul plant such as the leaves, berry and seeds can be used by those suffering from diabetes. In fact, research has shown that the fruits and seeds of this plant have hypoglycemic effects as they help reduce blood and urine sugar levels rapidly.
The seeds, in particular, contain glycoside jamboline and alkaloid jambosine that regulate control blood sugar levels.
Whenever this seasonal fruit is available in the market, try to include it in your diet as it can be very effective for the pancreas. Else you can make a powder of dried seeds of Jambul fruit and eat this powder with water twice a day. This fruit is native to India and its neighboring countries but you can find it at Asian markets and herbal shops.

6. Mango Leaves

The delicate and tender mango leaves can be used to treat diabetes by regulating insulin levels in the blood. They can also help improve blood lipid profiles.
  • Soak 10 to 15 tender mango leaves in a glass of water overnight. In the morning, filter the water and drink it on an empty stomach.
  • You can also dry the leaves in the shade and grind them. Eat one-half teaspoon of powdered mango leaves two times daily.

7. Curry Leaves

curry leaves
Curry leaves are useful in preventing and controlling diabetes as they have anti-diabetic properties. It is believed that curry leaves contain an ingredient that reduces the rate at which starch is broken down to glucose in diabetics.
So, you can simply chew about 10 fresh curry leaves daily in the morning. For best results, continue this treatment for three to four months. It also helps reduce high cholesterol levels and obesity.

8. Aloe Vera

aloe vera
Aloe vera gel helps lower fasting blood glucose levels. It contains phytosterols that have possible anti-hyperglycemic effects for type 2 diabetes.
The combination of aloe vera gel, bay leaves and turmeric is helpful for controlling blood sugar. To make this herbal medicine:
  1. Mix together one-half teaspoon each of ground bay leaves and turmeric and one tablespoon of aloe vera gel.
  2. Consume it twice daily, before lunch and dinner.

9. Guava

guava fruit
Due to its vitamin C and high fiber content, eating guava can be really helpful in maintaining the blood sugar level. It is best for diabetics not to eat the skin of the fruit so peel it first. However, too much consumption of guava in a day is not recommended.

10. Okra

okra
Okra, also called ladies’ finger, has constituents such as polyphenolic molecules that can help reduce blood glucose levels and control diabetes.
A 2011 study published in the Journal of Pharmacy and BioAllied Sciences found okra seed and peel powder to have antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic potential.
  • Cut off the ends of a few okras and prick them in several places using a fork. Soak the okras in a glass of water overnight. In the morning, discard the okras and drink the water on an empty stomach. Do this daily for several weeks.
  • Also, include okra in your diet.
Additional Tips
  • Keep monitoring your blood sugar levels.
  • Follow a healthy eating plan and exercise regularly.
  • Get plenty of fiber in your diet.
  • A few minutes of daily exposure to sunlight can also help control diabetes because it helps produce vitamin D, which is essential for insulin production.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. In fact, replace your regular sodas and sugary juices with water. In addition to providing hydration, water helps break down sugars.
  • Try deep breathing, meditation, listening to your favorite music, or working on your hobby to relieve stress as it may raise your blood sugar.

What is Diabetes?

In medical world, diabetes is known more commonly by the name of diabetes mellitus. In simpler and day-to-day language, it is referred as diabetes. It is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced, or the body does not produce enough insulin. In both the conditions, the body is not able to get enough amount of insulin to function properly. In other words, we can say that diabetes is a continual metabolic disorder that prevents the body from utilizing glucose totally or partially. The disorder is characterized by raised glucose absorption in the blood. When body does not have enough insulin, it cannot use or store glucose, which raises the level of glucose in the body. Diabetes is not curable, but controllable. There are several methods and remedies which can be used to tame this dreadful disease. Such is its dreadfulness that it is one of the major causes of disability and death in USA. In most of the cases, diabetes further leads to other critical diseases, like heart failure, obesity, cardiac arrest, etc.

More About Diabetes

As of 2010, an estimated of 285 million people have type 2 diabetes globally, making up about 90% of all the diabetes cases. There is an alarming rise in the prevalence of diabetes in every part of the world, thanks to the eating habits and sedentary lifestyle. And, as opposed to the misconception that eating sweets can result in diabetes, stress and genes can also play a major role in this. As of today, number of diabetics is far more than anytime in the past. Now, even younger generation is not spared by this disease. Generally, diabetes is more common in people who are overweight or obese. Generally, fasting blood sugar levels per 100 ml of blood should be between 80 to 120 mg, which can go up to 160 mg/100 ml of blood after meals. Anything that is constantly above 160 mg/100 ml indicates diabetes. Usually, older and obese people are at increased risk of diabetes because of their inability to produce insulin and lifestyle.

Different Types and Causes of Diabetes

Majorly, there are three types of diabetes mellitus – type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

It is also known as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and results from body's inability to produce insulin. Usually, it occurs in childhood or adolescence, but can surface up at any age. In this, the patient needs to take insulin injections on regular intervals (generally daily) in order to absorb glucose in the body. Type 1 diabetes mellitus is also referred to as juvenile diabetes, at times.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the body cells develop resistance to insulin and fail to use it properly. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is more common amongst overweight and obese adults over 40 years of age. The disorder can also be referred to as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes mellitus. Mostly, these patients need to manage their blood sugar levels through regular exercise, weight control, balanced diet, and anti-diabetes medications.

Gestational Diabetes

It is the type of diabetes that women develop when pregnant. Even if they have not had any signs of diabetes earlier, they develop high blood glucose levels during their phase of pregnancy, leading to diabetes. Generally, this form of diabetes gets cured automatically after delivery.

Other Forms

Some other forms of diabetes mellitus include congenital diabetes, cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, steroid diabetes, and different forms of monogenic diabetes. While congenital diabetes is generally due to genetic defects of insulin secretion, steroid diabetes is induced by high doses of glucocorticoids.
Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus are chronic conditions that can only be managed using insulin, anti-diabetes medications, lifestyle changes, etc., but cannot be cured. Gestational diabetes generally resolves on itself after the delivery. If not managed properly, diabetes can cause several other complications, like hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, nonketotic hyperosmolar coma, etc. Other serious and long-term complications include cardiovascular diseases, chronic renal failure, diabetic retinopathy, etc.

Causes of Diabetes

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is mostly outcome of a virus-initiated autoimmune destruction of beta cells in the pancreas.
Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus can be inherited and surface up with age or factors like obesity, diet, lifestyle, inactivity, etc.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Some of the symptoms that indicate diabetes are:
  • Increased thirst, frequent urination, and increased appetite.
  • Unexplained weight gain/loss.
  • Blurred vision, skin irritation/infection, constant weakness and loss of strength.
  • Slow or delayed healing of cuts, wounds.

Other Treatment Methods

Insulin Therapy

Insulin therapy is taken by diabetics who have type 1 diabetes mellitus, or IDDM, i.e., insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. In this condition, body is not able to produce any insulin, therefore, it has to be administered externally. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus are either resistant to insulin or have relatively low insulin production, or both.

Oral Hypoglycemic Medications

Anti-diabetic medications are used to control type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this case, body cells are resistant to insulin (injections), therefore medications are given orally to lower the blood glucose levels. In most of the cases, oral hypoglycemic agents are highly effective. One just needs to ascertain which suits him/her the best. There are several classes of anti-diabetic drugs. Largely, their selection depends on the nature of the diabetes, age and situation of the person, as well as other factors.

Diabetes Education

Diabetes education is very important for any diabetic or a person who has a diabetic at home. The education helps an individual to know more about this dreadful disease. Once educated, the individual can control diabetes in a better manner. Administering insulin, medications, and understanding emergency situations like hypoglycemic attacks, etc. are major points of diabetes education. It also includes the diet a diabetic should avoid and have. Diabetes education is very essential for each and every diabetic and individual who has someone close living with diabetes.

Lifestyle Changes

If diagnosed at an early stage, diabetes can be controlled with some minor lifestyle changes. A person can straightaway keep a check on his/her diet and start exercising on a regular basis. At any stage of diabetes, however, lifestyle changes are required. Therefore, it is better to imbibe these changes in one's life as soon as one comes to know about this disease.

Diabetes is a disease that has attacked more than 1/3rd of the world's population. Our modern lifestyles are to be blamed for the rapid pace at which the number of diabetics is growing in the world. But along with the number of diabetics, the myths about diabetes are also growing at an alarming pace.

There is lot to know about diabetes and these myths only cloud our judgement. Whether or not you have high blood sugar, you have to know certain facts about diabetes. It is impossible to control diabetes without busting some basic myths. That is why, FriendsTamil is busting the worst myths about diabetes today.

These are some of the most dangerous myths about diabetes that needs to be busted.

I don't eat sweets so I won't get diabetes:Diabetes is a lifestyle disorder; it has nothing to do with your sugar consumption. And even if you don't eat sweets, the carbohydrates that you eat will be broken down into glucose in your body.

If the doctor puts me on insulin, my diabetes is in the last stage: Diabetes does not have any stages like cancer. Your blood sugar can be high, low or normal. If you take insulin and control your diabetes, you can live a healthy life for decades.

I am diabetic so I don't eat any carbs at all: Carbs are the fuel of the body and even diabetics cannot cut out carbs completely. You have to exercise and take medications for diabetes. Try to eat fibrous carbohydrates instead of refined ones.

Pumpkin and all other 'sweet' vegetables are taboo for diabetics: Diabetics should not eat foods that have a high glycemic index as they raise your blood sugar levels quickly. Pumpkin may taste sweet but does not have a high glycemic index. In fact it is beneficial for treating insulin resistance.

Diabetics must always have sugar substitutes: It is better to have natural sugars like honey and fruits instead of saccharine. This is because many sugar substitutes are carcinogenic; regular intake of these artificial sugars can cause cancer.

No one in my family has diabetes so I am safe Diabetes is hereditary to a large extent. However, it is mainly a lifestyle disorder. So if you don't get time to exercise and have a very stressful life, you are in the high risk zone for getting diabetes.

I am not obese so I can't be diabetic: Obesity definitely increases the chances of getting diabetes. However, diabetes can also make you lose weight. So be careful if you drop pounds abruptly and effortlessly.

Kids don't have type 2 diabetes : We usually think that kids only have type 1 diabetes which is a birth defect. Considering the amount of junk food that kids eat today, it is not unheard of for kids to develop type 2 diabetes as well.

Gestational diabetes is temporary thus not a threat: It is true that gestational diabetes goes away after the pregnancy is over. However, women who suffer from gestational diabetes are at high risk to develop type 2 diabetes later in life.

I take insulin/medications for diabetes so I can eat whatever I want: To control diabetes, you need to alter your diet and lifestyle. Taking insulin or medications does not give you the license to eat or do whatever you want.
