Ooty Tourism - Queen of the Hills

Ooty is a picturesque town located in the beautiful hills of Nilgiris. The official name of the town is Ootacamund and has been abbreviated to Ooty for the convenience of the tourists who flock in large numbers to this hill station of south India. The town is part of the Nilgiri District in the state of Tamil Nadu.
The Nilgiri Hills that surround the town of Ooty is responsible for its scenic beauty. The hills are also called the Blue Mountains. Some people believe that the origin of this name is because of the Kurunji flowers that bloom once every 12 years in the valley. These flowers are blue in color and impart a bluish tinge to the hills when they bloom.
The history of the town can be traced back to the tribe of Todas, who occupied it before the East India Company took over the reins of the place in the beginning of 19th century.
Tourist places in and around Ooty

Botanical Garden, Dodabetta Peak, Ooty Lake, Kalhatti Falls and the Flower Show are some of the reasons Ooty is so popular among the tourists from all over the world. Avalanche is a scenic getaway from Ooty, Glenmorgan quaint and cute village, Mukurthi National Park etc are all some very interesting tourist attractions of Ooty.
How to reach Ooty

The place is easily reachable via road and trains. The airport closest to Ooty is at Coimbatore.
Ooty weather

Ooty has a pleasant climate throughout the year thanks to its location. However, winters do tend to be a little colder than is usual for south India.
The Colonial Inheritance

The influence of British culture as well as architecture can be seen in the town. In fact, many tourists have noted that the hill station is reminiscent of a quaint English village. This is perhaps the reason the town's maximum economy is generated by the business of tourism.

The British were so impressed by the climate as well as by the scenic beauty of the place that they named Ooty the 'Queen of Hill Stations'. For them, it was like finding a hidden treasure because they could not tolerate the hot and humid climate of the other towns in southern India.
They were so eager to stake their claim over the region that they also raised the Madras Regiment in the nearby town of Wellington. To this day Wellington remains the center of the Madras Regiment.
This increased the popularity of Ooty as a summer/ weekend getaway among the British. The town has also had the distinction of being the summer capital of the Madras Presidency.
The British East India Company also took over the development of Ooty and started growing tea, teak and chinchona on the Nilgiris.
Many splendid tea and coffee plantation estates now exist in and around Ooty.
The Lost History of Ooty

Ooty has an old world charm that remains unmatched even to this day. When you walk around in Ooty, you will be transported to ancient times by simply looking at the architecture and designs of some of the buildings in Ooty. They will remind you an era gone by. Ooty has no history to fall back upon. Its rise started with the coming of the British. However, even in these past two centuries the town has created enough history to make up for the one that it never had or that which has been lost to us.
For the modern world, the history of Ooty starts with the settling in of the British, mainly the soldiers, in this exotic land. The deep influence that the British had on the place is clearly visible as soon as one enters the town. The art and architecture of the buildings, the designs and the style of construction of the houses, all are reminiscent of the British era.
The cultural practices of the British are deeply ingrained in the lives of the local people irrespective of their religious beliefs. The local cuisine has also borrowed heavily from the English dishes. As a result, you get the best food in Ooty that is an amalgamation of English herbs and Indian spices.
The British, along with the hardworking local population, helped Ooty achieve the success that it enjoys today. This rich cultural diversity could have existed only in Ooty. Hence, today it would be wrong to say that Ooty has no historical past, or it holds no historical significance in the development of India.

History of the city Erode
In 850 A.D., the Erode city was under the rule of the Cars emperors. Between 1000 A.D. to 1275 A.D., this city came under the regime of Cholas, later in 1276 A.D., it was under the authority of the Padiars. During this time, an emperor Veerapandian, initiated the burrowing of the Kalingarayan channel. Then came the reign of Muslims and thereafter the Madurai kings governed. After that, Tippu Sultan and Hyder Ali ruled the city, and in the year 1799, East India Company captured the government.
The name "Erode" is derived from "Eera Odu", which stands for "wet skulls". There is a tale behind this name. Dakshyayini was the daughter of Dakhshaprajapathi, and she was married to Lord Shiva. Once, the king Dakhshaprajapathi carried out a Yagya. In this Yagya, he invited everyone except Lord Shiva.
However, Dakshyayini wanted to take part in the Yagya, but her husband Lord Shiva didn't allow her to do so. Despite objection from her husband, she took part in the Yagya, but she was not greeted by her parents or anybody else. Because of insult and anger, she threw herself in the Yagya kunda and blazed to ashes. On listening to this, Lord Shiva got extremely furious and went to the Yagya kunda and threw everyone present over there including Lord Brahma.
After this incident, the bones and skulls of the dead people were thrown in the Cauvery River and remained wet forever. Thus, the name Eera Odu means the wet skulls.

Normally, the Erode district has a dry climate and the rain is unsatisfactory. In the months of February and March, the climate of the place is very humid in general, especially alongside the Cauvery River. In April, the climate becomes hotter and attains maximum humidity.

Valparai Tourism – Where Tea, Coffee and Wilderness Abound

Valparai is one hill station not meant for the light hearted. Placed at an elevation of 3500 feet above sea level, it is one of the most beautiful hill stations in Tamil Nadu. Valparai is located in Coimbatore district and is part of the Anamalai Mountain Range. Most of the mountainous expanses that come under this hill station are still off limits, almost 170 years after the first human settlement in Valparai. It is a hill station where the manmade tea and coffee plantations co-exists with the dense forests, wild waterfalls and whispering streams.
Buckle up for the ride to Valparai though, there are 40 or so hair pin bends on the route to Valparai from Azhiyar. Pollachi is the place closest to Valparai in the plains, and is some 65 kilometers away from it. The city of Coimbatore is located some 100 kilometers away from Valparai.
Tourist places in and around Valparai

There are many site seeing options in and around Valparai apart from Chinnakalar falls. The most famous pilgrim center in the area is Balaji Temple. Nirar dam, Ganapati Temple and Annai Velankanni Church are a few other attractions you can explore. The scenic beauty of Sholayar Dam, Grass Hills and View Points make them must see attractions for any tourist who plans a trip to Valparai.
The Land of Evergreen Forests

Valparai that boasts of almost zero manmade tourists attractions has many deep forests, wildlife sanctuaries and waterfalls. Most of the forest areas are still not reachable to the tourists. There are many wildlife attractions in Valparai that a visitor should not miss out.
An example would be Chinnakallar, also known as the "Cherrapunji" of South India due to the rainfall it gets, and Grass Hills, which is a part of the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary. The place is also famous for plantations, tea factories and dams.
Taking a stroll through the tea plantations in the morning will help you unwind your soul in the lap of nature. The place with its wildlife and natural beauty is a favourite with people who has a taste for photography.
How to reach Valparai

The place is well-connected by road and rail. The closet airport to Valparai is Coimbatore airport that lies 107 kilometers away from Valparai. Approaching Valparai is pretty easy via road. Cabs from Coimbatore charge comparatively nominal rates to take you to Valparai. It's also easy to travel to Valparai via Bus, from Coimbatore and Pollachi.

Valparai weather

The climate here is what you would expect from a hill station. Winters and monsoons get pretty cold. It would not be a good idea to go there during either of these seasons. During summer the area enjoys a pleasant weather and is the best season to visit the place.

Talakadu Tourism - The City of Lost Temples

Talakadu, once a magnificent city with more than 30 temples, was buried under sand in the 16th century. Writings from the time say that this was caused due to a natural disaster during the rule of the Wodeyars, but local stories and myths state otherwise. It is said that Talakadu was buried under sand because of the curse of Alamelu, the queen of the region.

Talakadu, a city that once sported five popular Shiva temples, was ruled by the Gangas and then by the Cholas. The Cholas were chased out of Talakadu by the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana. The city was later ruled by the King of Vijayanagara and was taken over by the Wodeyars of Mysore.
When the Raja from Mysore moved against Talakadu with an army in order to lay his hands on a jewel of Alamelu, she threw the jewel into the River Cauvery and drowned herself. Legend states that before she died, she laid a curse, stating: œLet Talakadu change to sand, let Malangi become a whirlpool and let the Mysore Kings be heirless. It was in the 16th century the city was buried under sand.
The Local Culture and Heritage - Tourist places in Talakadu

The city is known for its five temples, namely the Vaidyanatheshwara, Pathaleshwara, Maruleshwara, Arkeshwara, and Mallikarjuna temples. All these temples tend to get buried under sand every year, but efforts are now constantly on to keep these open. The region also has a Keerthinatheshwara temple, a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu that stands among the five Shiva temples, and this is now being reconstructed.
The river Cauvery flows through this city and takes a very sharp bend here, so the scene on the banks of the Cauvery here is picturesque. This city is popular for its Panchalinga Darshana which takes place once in 12 years. The last one happened in the year 2009. The Panchalinga Darshana takes place on the new moon day in the month of Karthika, when the two stars Khuha Yoga and Vishaka come together.
